2001 Midwest Green Campus Workshop
Creating and Implementing Plans for Environmentally and Economically
Beneficial Change
Overview
On Saturday, November 3rd, 2001, we hosted the second Midwest Green Campus
workshop. Our goal was to build on the first workshop (held in May 2000
at the University of St. Thomas) by emphasizing local case studies that
demonstrated both environmental and economic effectiveness. We built the
workshop around four topics: energy, green buildings, waste reduction and
green grounds. Jessica Stine of the National
Wildlife Federation introduced each topic with examples from a nation-wide
perspective, then participants broke into several breakout sessions to
learn about local examples. We encouraged campuses to organize teams of
administrators, faculty, staff and students in order to foster communication
within individual campuses.
Participation
Over 70 individuals participated in the workshop, including speakers
and organizers. Sixteen teams from eleven different campuses or organizations
were present: Carleton College, Macalester College, Minnesota Office of
Environmental Assistance, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, Rainy
River Community College, St. John's University / The College of St. Benedict,
University of Minnesota - Duluth, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities,
University of St. Thomas, University of Wisconsin - Madison, and University
of Wisconsin - Stevens Point.
Of the registered participants, approximately 45% were students, 35%
staff/administrators and 20% faculty.
